Full movie description "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster":A princess from a small Himalayan country becomes possessed by the spirit of a Venusian (a Martian in the American version) and escapes a plane just as it explodes. As this happens a meteorite falls from the sky containing Ghidorah, the monster responsible for her planet's destruction. At the same time, Godzilla and Rodan emerge from hibernation and not only attack Japan, but each other as well. Mothra, along with its twin priestesses, attempt to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop their fighting each other and to team up to fight the new monster. At the same time, the princess is being hunted by a group of assassins who want to kill her so that her enemies can take over her homeland.
Reviews of the Ghidorah, the Three-Headed MonsterI've just seen the Toho Japanese DVD release of this. What fun! This is probably the most purely entertaining of the Inoshiro Honda "Godzilla" films, and proves that Honda (who could get pretty heavy-handed with these puppet monster movies) was capable of real wit. The earth monsters are given believable human-like personalities that, mass-destruction aside, make us warm up to them right away. There are also bits and pieces of weird humor, such as the sudden cut to the self-proclaimed UFO expert who insists that the Venusian/Princess needed to have fallen through a dimensional rift, otherwise her existence just wasn't possible. The Mothra twins get to sing a couple enjoyable pop-songs, the Venutian/Princess is stunningly beautiful (the actress would go on to be a Bond girl in "You Only Live Twice"), and the dialog is the snappiest of the first phase of the early Big G. series. The relationship between the appearance of the monsters and the mystery of the Venutian/Princess is well-handled; while the plotting isn't all that tight, it does hold together surprisingly well. And the special fx are still credible for this series in its time.
One sad note: apparently the Japanese version lacks a line that is an all-time favorite of the series, and which must have been added by the dubbing team - Shobijin: "Oh Godzilla, such terrible language!" - spoken while Godzilla and Mothra are arguing whether to save the human race.
However, when this film is re-released on DVD, it really must be this DVD that gets to America. There is a wonderful added value to this DVD, a collection of home-movies shot by a crew-member during the making of the film! Absolutely marvelous; I didn't realize just how much effort and care went into the making of what most believe to be silly rubber-monster films. At one point, a woman is seen building a model house - which will be on screen only long enough to get stomped by Godzilla (10 seconds?)- and she is painstakingly applying each individual shingle to the roof - a good day's job for just the one house! Overall, easily one of the best - and most likable - films in the series, in a great DVD release from Toho.
